New Oculus Quest 2 Update 40 Official Release Notes

It’s all about security in the newest quest firmware update, here’s what’s going on with version 40.

You can now lock individual apps and games with an unlock pattern (can’t imagine what you would use that for…) But if you share your headset and need to keep a youngling away from blade and sorcery here’s how:

Go to the settings cog wheel then security, click the switch for locked apps and then create a passcode if you haven’t already to enable that switch. Then go to your apps page click the three dots and choose lock on the app of your choice. and wala your secrets are now hidden like your high school live journal

New secure payments hit the quest headset with 3DS enabled credit cards. What’s 3DS you say? Its a form of secure payment where the acronym stands for 3 domains meaning the payment passes through the card issuer, the retailer and then the 3ds platform which basically a secure go between for you and the retailer.

Side note this will also need to be authorized by each developer for in app purchases. honestly I don’t really know what it is other than your payments will now be extra secure

Messenger is testing end to end encryption inside chat so when you tell your buddy he sucks in blaston its going to be on lock down.

Your quest Audio is also getting some updates for those who are hard of hearing. A new mono option allows the user to hear the same audio from both right and left channels on your headset and in headphones rather than the default spatial audio setting.

In this setting you can balance the audio to what suits you if you are hard of hearing in a certain ear you can use a slider towards that ear to feel more audibly centered.

Apparently You will be able to do this under the accessibility tab in the settings menu but as of this video I did not have the feature yet.

Lastly for the keyboarders out there meta adds support for the apple magic numeric keypad and the Logitech k375s and MX keyboards.

There you have it, what are your thoughts on the big 40 update? Lets hash it out in the comments and I’ll catch you in the next quickie.

Meta Quest 2 Updates: How Do They Work & How to Join Quest 2 PTC

Its no secret that not everyone gets the Quest firmware updates at the same time and the folks at scarred ghost let us know why.

Firstly all quest updates get a gradual release so meta can catch any detrimental bugs and fix them before sending out completely to the masses. So you can be early in the rollout timeline but get the bugs or later in the release and get a clean update but just have to wait.

Meta does not time the rollouts by location so certain regions are not getting them before others its just completely random all over the world so they can test for any issues for different regions and languages. Also the timeline is supposedly randomized as well. If you received update 39 early you may be waiting longer than others for version 40. So its kind of like roulette headset.

As for timing, If the rollout goes smoothly they usually take just a few days to get to thos at the end of the line, but if problems arise of course it will take more time for everyone to get the update.

On top of update release timing, new features also get a staggered release. So you may have the latest update and looking for something like the new hand tracking 2.0 feature but don’t yet have it. Almost as if the feature gets a flag from meta’s servers on if your device can enable it or not.

Meta does this again to catch any bugs with new features they may be crippling to the device and if so they can remotely disable the feature while allowing the full update to proceed to everyone. New special features are usually rolled out over 3 - 5 days but again if there are problems it will be longer. Unfortunately as of right now there isn’t a way to know what features are or aren’t enabled for your device.

If you like to risk it for the bisquit you can sign up for the public test channel to get updates early but of course you can run into problems when testing beta software but you could also be the first one with that new Quest horizon home space feature we heard about forever ago.

Lifes nothing more than a gamble but to sign up for the PTC go into the newest update version of the oculus app on your phone while near your headset, enable bluetooth on your phone then go to menu at the bottom right then devices and once your headset is connected, go below to advance settings and you’ll see public test channel.

If you’re lucky there may be an opening for you but currently at least for me its full.

Life as a quest update is a lottery, do you get them pretty soon after they are announced? Let me know below and I’ll see you in the next quickie!

New Features Coming to the Meta Quest OS & Dashboard

From the meta leaker goat Brad Lynch and his private source we found out about some possible new oculus meta quest 2 features coming in the future for the meta quest home environment and dashboard.

A quick resume feature like the one found on the xbox series will be added as part of a system that will expand your home environment. This feature will rid the days of only having one app open at a time and having to completely close out and save before entering another VR experience. This will work for both 2D apps like the browser and VR games.

This quick resume feature will be built upon a 3 windowed system anchored to different places inside your home space. So when you teleport to let’s say the couch of your home environment you’ll have a set of three custom windows waiting for you in the headset memory and are then triggered to resume when you enter the area. So you can have a window for bigscreen, amazon prime and netflix pop up and then seamlessly jump in when you are by your virtual couch. This of course will then suspend all the other apps that will be anchored in the other areas you just left. The keyword here again is suspend and not close out, so please keep me open daddy, I’ve got some bonelabbin to do.

Overall the dashboard and home area will be rebuilt for better optimization and multitasking more than likely preparing for the launch of the work and productivity based project cambria and hopefully the quest 2 will get to take part in some of those upgrades.

Shout out again to brad and his secret source. What three windows would you have waiting for you everytime you logged in to your quest. Let me know down below and I’ll catch you in the next quickie.
