Project Cambria Update, Color Passthrough & Presence Platform

I’ll start by saying I’m sorry but I was wrong.

Project Cambria is definitely going to push VR gaming into the future. Today Zuck revealed some new info on the experiences coming to the cambria headset in a censored trailer along with a sit down with Jess schell from schell games who created games like i expect you to die and are working on the among us vr release.

In the conversation zuckerberg states the cambria will have a tighter form factor than the quest 2 and confirms the new high resolution color outward facing cameras as well as the depth sensors.

That color camera and depth sensor are the backbone to the newly released Presence Platform. Over the last few months devs have received new features one at a time and now it is ready and available to all developers. Soon we will be fishing in our floor or using spatial anchors to place digital assets in our physical world like this chess board to play with that one other friend you have that plays chess or bring the I expect you to die escape system right into our living room.

Basically the cambria will take the color camera view as your default home and then have assets digitally placed. With this Zuck hopes for mixed reality to help draw new people into vr with the presence platform. Instead of people being placed in a game world like vr they can now be in their physical world with the game placed inside it. So you can play beat saber in your bath tub. He used an example of bringing in a digital ping pong table into your living room and inviting a friend to play. Which makes me wonder if we will be buying games as digital assets in the future, which sounds much better than NFTs…

In the trailer Zuck posted we learned about an experience called the World beyond which uses the presence platform to create all new mixed reality experiences like adding these flowers and this Guitar digitally to your room or turn your walls into a dreamland of whatever you or well a dev can think up.

The world beyond will be available on the quest via app lab soon but of course only the full color pass through version will be available on cambria.

Zuck bucks did finish detailing one of his biggest focuses with cambria is on work and productivity. He expects by the end of this decade to see more people using a vr device at work for more of their work day. So they can have as many monitors as they need, and can collaborate with co workers who are far away but with the presence platform will be in the room with them. And again an innovation on zoom meetings. He also said the word hologram a lot. Star Wars life is not too far.

Lastly I did want to point out that even though the trailer had it pixelated the headset does look very much like the renders produced by Brad and Marcus Kane and peeping through the pixels it doesn’t seem like there will be too much space for light bleed underneath the cambria. Also brad of course saw the controllers on a charging pad and the headset unblurred in the background.

Well I hope to see your presence in this next video and what are your thoughts now that we have some more solid info on cambria. Let me know in the comments and I’ll catch you in the next quickie.

Meta is Releasing FOUR New Quest VR Headsets? + Project Cambria Update

Another day means more Meta Quest leaks, this time from insider tech business publication the Information. Here’s the 411 on the four new quest headsets Meta is planning to release by 2024

In the reporting A road map for Meta was shown to feature a release for four different VR headsets in the next 2 years. The next one of course being project cambria then following up  are two new versions of the current more affordable and consumer friendly Quest internally named Stinson and Cardiff for 2023 and 2024. Then a second version of the cambria codenamed funston. Everything must be a beach in california bc well technology can only be created there right? Its all about the sand for the wafers.

So basically meta wants to release a high end headset and then a lower cost hmd the following year. Aka the back in the day apple approach to the S phone models.

This wicked fast timeline is to bring Zucks vision of the metaverse (ick) to life and get more people into VR. Which Goldman sachs predicts by 2023 over 19 million VR headsets will be sold. I mean add the upcoming PSVR2 plus the quest sales from this year and that number will more than likely be in sight.

The information reported that according to two people in the know, the cambria is expected to cost around $800 while a meta spokesperson said the price would be much higher.

Project cambria known inside Meta as Arcata, has been alluded to by the employees of Reality Labs as the laptop for the face or a chromebook for the face. Ahh yeas chrome facebook. OH GAH!

Cambria again will run on the android based vr OS which according to the information means it won’t be able to run many common workplace software designed for PCs or Macs, (press F excel master users) but it can run web based tools and services through the VR browser. Office 365 is about to go virtual.

Project Camb was said to be heavier than the quest 2 due to its larger battery but with the built in skull battery design it will be more balanced and comfortable than the quest 2.

Will $800 be the reality? Do we even care now that we definitely know it’s not going to really be for gaming? Hit me up in the comments and I’ll catch you in the next leakie…. I mean quickie.

Project Cambria / Meta Quest 2 Pro Update from Zuckerberg

Project Cambria or maybe the final name of it the Meta Quest 2 Pro headset gets a few words from Mark Zuckerberg during Meta's Q1 2022 earnings call. Here are those words.

“The last priority I want to discuss today is the metaverse. While we're focusing on the biggest opportunities and challenges of today, I think it's important to build the foundation for the next era of social technology as well.

The centerpiece of our strategy is the social platform that we're starting to build with Horizon. It's still early but as we build out the experience, the next focus will be on growing the community. We plan to launch a web version of Horizon later this year that will make it easy for people to step into metaverse experiences from a lot more platforms, even without needing a headset. I think the best experience will be on virtual and eventually augmented reality platforms -- and especially on our platforms like Quest, where in an upcoming release, from the moment you put on your headset you’re going to be embodied in your Meta avatar and ready to interact in Horizon with your friends right from your Quest home.

But making this available everywhere will mean you can interact with anyone on whatever device or platform that they want to use. Our other focus for Horizon is building out the metaverse economy and helping creators make a living working in the metaverse. We expect to be meaningfully better at monetization than others in this space, and we think that should become a sustainable advantage for our platforms as they develop.

On the hardware side, Meta Quest 2 continues to be the leading virtual reality headset. Later this year, we'll release a higher-end headset, codenamed Project Cambria, which will be more focused on work use cases and eventually replacing your laptop or work setup. This premium device will have improved ergonomics and full color passthrough mixed reality to seamlessly blend virtual reality with the physical world. We're also building in eye tracking and face tracking so that your avatar can make eye contact and facial expressions, which dramatically improves your sense of presence.

It's also a good example of why we're developing hardware in addition to the social platforms. We're bringing Horizon to more platforms, but if you want to be able to make eye contact or have your physical facial expressions just automatically get translated to your avatar in real-time, then our hardware will provide the best metaverse experience -- whether you're playing a game or meeting with co-workers in Horizon Workrooms. We'll share more details about Project Cambria in the months ahead as we get ready to launch it.
